The first Malta Study Circle was founded by a small group of enthusiasts in 1948 but did not last. Robson Lowe successfully revived the Circle, when six collectors met at Robson Lowe's auction rooms on 20th December 1955. Since then the Circle has published nearly fifty study papers and over twenty volumes of newsletters, as well as providing the information for the handbook. Nevertheless new information is continually coming to light.

Below is an extract from the 1980 Newsletter Volume 10 No 1 by the late John Lander which describes in more detail the events that led to the formation of the circle.

This is poiniant time to include this reference as this year (2019) saw the passing of our President John Lander a life long member from those early days.
